Why Visit Mikumi National Park?

Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania's most underrated safari destinations. Often overshadowed by the famous Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, Mikumi offers a spectacular wildlife experience without the crowds.

The Wildlife

Mikumi is home to an incredible variety of animals. You'll see elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and buffalo roaming freely across the open plains. The park is especially famous for its large herds of elephants and the rare African wild dogs that can sometimes be spotted.

The birdlife is equally impressive, with over 400 species recorded in the park. Lilac-breasted rollers, African fish eagles, and colorful kingfishers are just a few of the birds you might encounter.

The Landscape

The park's landscape is stunning. The open savannah plains stretch as far as the eye can see, dotted with baobab trees and acacias. The Mkata River runs through the park, attracting wildlife during the dry season. The floodplains are home to hippos and crocodiles, and the surrounding hills provide a beautiful backdrop.

Unlike some of the busier parks, Mikumi offers a peaceful and relaxed safari experience. You can enjoy game drives without being surrounded by dozens of other vehicles.

Getting There

Mikumi is conveniently located about four hours from Dar es Salaam, making it an excellent choice for travelers with limited time. It's also accessible by a short flight from Dar es Salaam, with airstrips located near the park.

When to Visit

The dry season from June to October is the best time for wildlife viewing. Animals gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. The wet season from November to May brings lush greenery and is a great time for birdwatching.
