Best Time to Climb Mount Kilimanjaro via Machame Route

Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but weather conditions vary by season.

January to March offers cooler temperatures, fewer climbers, greener scenery, and occasional afternoon showers. This period is ideal for travelers seeking quieter trails and excellent photography.

June to October is the busiest climbing season. Weather is generally dry with clear skies, making it the best period for summit success and spectacular mountain views.

November is the short rainy season. Although rainfall is more frequent, climbs are still possible. Trails are quieter, landscapes are lush and green, and prices may be more competitive.

December is an excellent month for climbing, especially from mid-December through New Year. Many travelers choose this period for holiday adventures, and weather conditions are often favorable.

April and May are the long rainy season. These months receive heavier rainfall, making trails wetter and more challenging. However, experienced hikers looking for fewer crowds and a unique trekking experience can still successfully climb with proper equipment and preparation.

Because Kilimanjaro stands close to the equator, climbing is possible in every month of the year. With experienced guides and the right preparation, every season offers its own unique beauty.

Unlike the Marangu Route, Machame uses comfortable mountain tents, allowing climbers to enjoy a true wilderness experience.
