8 Days Umbwe Route Trekking - Mount Kilimanjaro

Overview of the 8 Days Umbwe Route

The 8 Days Umbwe Route offers a challenging, scenic, and rewarding trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, ideal for experienced hikers seeking a quieter, steeper, and more adventurous ascent. Starting at the Umbwe Gate, this trail quickly gains elevation through lush, moss-covered rainforest and narrows into steep ridgelines as you ascend higher.

As one of the least trafficked routes on Kilimanjaro, Umbwe provides a raw wilderness experience and panoramic views. On day 3, the trail merges with the Machame Route at Barranco Camp. From there, trekkers follow the majestic Southern Circuit, climbing the famous Barranco Wall and passing through Karanga Camp and Barafu Camp.

The 8-day itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day at Karanga Camp, significantly improving your ability to adapt to high altitude and increasing your chances of a successful summit. On day 7, you’ll launch your summit attempt at midnight from Barafu Camp, reaching the iconic Uhuru Peak (5,895m) via Stella Point before descending through the Mweka Route.

The extended itinerary is perfect for those seeking better acclimatization and a more measured pace. Due to the steepness and altitude gain, the Umbwe Route is recommended for fit trekkers with prior high-altitude experience.

With Origin Ventures and Safaris, your trek is fully supported by our expert guides, professional cooks, and dedicated porters. We focus on your health, safety, comfort, and ultimate summit success throughout this incredible 8-day journey.

8 Days Umbwe Route Itinerary

This detailed day-by-day itinerary outlines your journey through the adventurous and steep Umbwe Route — one of the most direct and scenic paths up Mount Kilimanjaro. The 8-day version includes two acclimatization days, improving your body's adjustment to altitude and increasing your chances of reaching the summit safely.

Day 1: Umbwe Gate (1,800m) – Umbwe Camp (2,850m)

The adventure begins at Umbwe Gate after registration and briefing. The trail starts with a steep ascent through dense montane rainforest. Expect a narrow and rugged path, surrounded by giant fig trees, moss, and ferns. Reach Umbwe Camp in the late afternoon.

Hiking time: 5–7 hours   |   Habitat: Rainforest

Day 2: Umbwe Camp – Barranco Camp (3,950m)

The trail becomes steeper as you ascend through heath and moorland. You’ll emerge above the tree line and be rewarded with spectacular views of the valleys below. The trail merges with the Machame Route, arriving at the scenic Barranco Camp, beneath the imposing Barranco Wall.

Hiking time: 4–6 hours   |   Habitat: Heath and moorland

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Barranco Camp

Spend the day acclimatizing at Barranco Camp. You’ll take a short hike to higher elevation—perhaps toward Lava Tower—and return to camp for rest. This important day helps your body adapt to the altitude and sets you up for a stronger summit attempt.

Hiking time: 2–3 hours (optional hike)   |   Habitat: Moorland

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Today begins with a thrilling scramble up the famous Barranco Wall. Though it looks intimidating, it's not technical and rewards you with breathtaking views from the top. The path continues over rolling terrain, ending at Karanga Camp.

Hiking time: 4–5 hours   |   Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 5: Acclimatization Day at Karanga Camp

Another valuable acclimatization day at Karanga Camp. You may take a short hike toward the upper Barafu trail and return to camp. This rest day increases your chances of a safe and successful summit and allows your body additional time to adapt to higher elevations.

Hiking time: 2–3 hours (optional hike)   |   Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 6: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m)

A short yet steep climb leads you to Barafu Camp, your final stop before the summit attempt. The landscape is barren and windswept. After arriving early in the afternoon, eat an early dinner and rest before beginning your midnight trek to the top.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours   |   Habitat: Alpine desert

Day 7: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)

Summit day! Begin around midnight with a strenuous ascent to Stella Point on the crater rim, then push onward to Uhuru Peak—Africa’s highest point. After sunrise celebrations, descend to Barafu for rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp.

Hiking time: 12–15 hours total   |   Habitat: Arctic summit to rainforest

Day 8: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Arusha/Moshi

The final descent takes you back through lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where your adventure concludes. After receiving your summit certificate, your driver will transport you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for some well-earned rest.

Hiking time: 3–4 hours   |   Habitat: Rainforest
