8 Days Marangu Route Trekking

Overview of the 8 Days Marangu Route

The 8 Days Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most popular and well-established trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. This route is unique as it offers hut accommodations instead of tents, making it a great option for climbers looking for added comfort.

The trail begins at Marangu Gate and ascends through lush rainforest before transitioning to heath and moorland zones. Over the course of eight days, climbers pass through key landmarks such as Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, and the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.

A well-paced itinerary with an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut greatly increases your chances of successfully reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m), Africa’s highest point. The descent follows the same route, giving trekkers a familiar yet rewarding return journey.

Trekking with Origin Ventures and Safaris ensures you're guided by experienced mountain professionals—guides, porters, and cooks—dedicated to making your Kilimanjaro climb safe, enjoyable, and successful.

8 Days Marangu Route – Kilimanjaro Trekking Itinerary

Welcome to Origin Ventures and Safaris! Experience the iconic Marangu Route—the only route on Mount Kilimanjaro that offers hut accommodation throughout the journey. This 8-day trek includes an extra acclimatization day to increase summit success rates while enjoying a scenic journey from rainforest to summit.

Best Time to Trek: January–March and June–October. These months offer the best weather conditions and clear summit views. The Marangu Route is open year-round, making it ideal for first-time trekkers.

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi/Arusha (Optional)

Arrive in Moshi or Arusha and transfer to your hotel for a pre-climb briefing and gear check with your guides. This day can be used to rest, explore the town, and prepare for the trek ahead.

Day 2: Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,720m)

After breakfast, drive to Marangu Gate for registration and a short briefing. Begin your trek through lush rainforest filled with giant ferns, fig trees, and playful colobus monkeys.

Arrive at Mandara Hut after a 4–5 hour trek. Take an optional short walk to Maundi Crater for panoramic views over the plains and Mount Meru.

Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Leave the rainforest and enter the heath and moorland zone. The trail is open and scenic with giant groundsels and heather.

After a 5–6 hour trek, arrive at Horombo Hut with views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Enjoy a warm meal and rest in shared dormitory-style huts.

Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Spend a full day at Horombo Hut to acclimatize. Optional hike up to Mawenzi Ridge (4,300m) or Zebra Rocks to help your body adjust to the altitude.

This extra day significantly improves summit success and reduces altitude sickness. Return to Horombo for a second night.

Day 5: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut (4,700m)

Trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a high-altitude desert with minimal vegetation but dramatic landscapes.

Reach Kibo Hut in the afternoon. Rest early, as the summit attempt begins just after midnight.

Day 6: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Begin your summit push around midnight, climbing slowly through scree and switchbacks. Reach Gillman’s Point (5,685m) around sunrise, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa!

After photos and celebration at the summit, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue downward to Horombo Hut for your overnight stay.

Day 7: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi/Arusha

After breakfast, descend through moorland and lush rainforest to reach Marangu Gate. Sign out and receive your summit certificate—a proud moment!

Meet your driver and transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for a hot shower, celebration, and rest.

Day 8: Departure or Optional Safari/Tours

Depending on your schedule, enjoy a relaxing morning before heading to the airport. You may also choose to extend your trip with a Serengeti safari, Ngorongoro Crater tour, or Zanzibar beach holiday.
